War on Want Northern Ireland — Fighting World PovertyThe United Nations rates Malawi amongst the 40 poorest countries in the world. The majority of the 12 million population lives in rural areas and exist on farming very small plots of land producing just enough food for their family. Drought affects the country regularly and food shortages are a long-term problem.
1 million people are HIV positive and AIDS is one of the main causes of death in adults between 20 and 40. When adult bread-winners become ill and die, the number of healthy adults available to work the land decreases and the number of orphans and vulnerable old people increases.
We work with partners in Malawi on agriculture, food security and income generation programmes. We also support our partners in HIV/AIDS prevention and care and also work with groups with mobility problems.
