Campaigns

War on Want NI is actively involved in the Make Poverty History campaign in Northern Ireland the aims of which are to bring about policy change, create a momentum for change and commit the general public to campaign for further change after 2005.

The campaign demanded policy change in the areas of:

  1. Cancellation of Debt
  2. Quantity and Quality of Aid
  3. Trade justice

Real practical success has been achieved in the areas of:

Debt - 20 of the poorest countries in the world have had their debt cancelled. Quantity and Quality of Aid -countries have committed to increasing their contribution to International development to 0.7 of GNP and have also committed to improving the quality of aid. However little was achieved in the important area of trade.

War on Want NI has been, and continues to be, committed to Trade Justice issues. Its successful FAIRTRADE campaign "Your tea break ... their big break" brought about changes in local government policies by the adoption of a FAIRTRADE purchasing policy. It also brought about changes in the publics understanding of FAIRTRADE and recognition of the ethos of fairly traded goods.

War on Want NI continues to keep the debate on international trade to the forefront. It encourages consumers to use their purchasing power to help create a fairer trading world where producers in the developing world get a fair price for their product.

A good selection of fairly traded products can be purchased at the following War on Want NI shops:

24 Botanic Avenue Belfast BT7 1JQ Tel: (0) 28 9024 7773
